He had a sudden vision of himself crouched on the raft watching the white house, stealing up the path keeping vigil till the light in the room he had assumed was Diane’s flashed on.

He brushed his hand across his eyes. He was awake. Blood coursed through his veins again. He ran forward. His brain whirled. The Major. A stream of red stained the breast of his white coat. Mac lifted him till the silvery head rested against his shoulder. Who had shot him? He looked around for a weapon. A bit of metal glinted in the dim light. A rifle. As clearly as if broadcast from a radio Asaph Hicks’s voice echoed in Mac’s memory.

“You shouldn’t have did it, Di. Terrible risky.”

The Major’s wide-open eyes burned into his.

“Don’t—try to f—find who—shot—mistake. I don’t fight—”

His lids fell; his weak voice died away.
